Preparation

It’s natural to be anxious in the days before any surgery and having a good idea of what to expect can go a long way toward offsetting these feelings. Reading up on what to expect while preparing for your liposuction treatment should help to ease any pre-surgery jitters.

General Pre-Surgery Instructions
In the time leading up to your liposuction surgery you may be asked to follow several directions that will help to ensure the success of your treatment. These often include:

  • Ceasing smoking for a period of time before the surgery
  • Undergoing a medical evaluation and/or receiving lab testing
  • Adjusting the use of current medications
  • Taking specific medications that assist with the liposuction surgery
  • Avoiding the use of drugs that increase bleeding (such as anti-inflammatory medication, aspirin and certain herbal supplements)

Special Instructions for Your Liposuction From Your Surgeon
Your surgeon will also discuss special instructions that detail any steps you should take immediately before and after your liposuction surgery. These instructions will let you know what to do on the day of the procedure, detail the anaesthesia to be used and notes on post-operative care and follow-up appointments.
The location of your procedure will depend on the extent of your liposuction surgery and your personal preference. Many physicians are able to perform the treatment from their own surgical facility (if it is an accredited surgical centre) but, in some cases, your surgery may take place at a hospital. It all depends on the surgeon you’ve selected to perform your liposuction procedure.

Patients that are to be treated as an outpatient will need to make special arrangements for their post-operative care. You should arrange for someone to drive you to and from the treatment and to stay with you for at least the first night following liposuction surgery. You should be comfortable with this person in intimate situations, as they may need to help you bathe or go to the washroom.
