Read this Before You Choose a Liposuction Doctor!

In mid-June, a woman was arrested and charged for running an illegal liposuction clinic out of a garage in New Jersey. She did not have an official license to practice. Improperly disposed toxic garbage, such as used needles and surgical gloves, were also found in a trash can belonging to the “clinic”. (no, the photo isn't the real thing. It's just a stock photo)

But the scariest part of all was that besides not having an official license, she was believed to have prescribed and administered expired drugs to her trusting patients. While in some cases, drugs may last longer than their expiry date when stored under the right conditions, responsible cosmetic surgeons, and all doctors for that matter, will dispose of them for the safety of their patients. It may save the doctor and practice a few dollars, but it's certainly not worth the risk. It is considered irresponsible and unprofessional, as it could threaten the health of the patient.

Drugs past their expiry date often disintegrate and lose their effectiveness. So, for someone who's relying on the drugs to control a health condition, their ineffectiveness could jeopordize a physical or mental state. Expired drugs may even be poisonous, threatening .

The demand for cosmetic surgery is huge. Clinics and practices open every year to accommodate the millions of people seeking treatment. Unfortunately, in some cities it may be hard to monitor every clinic and practice in town. While there are organizations and watchdogs to prevent illegal activity, sometimes, they slip under the radar.

That's why it's vital that you do your research. Be vigilant. Check out the cosmetic surgeon's reputation, credentials, and experience before making a final decision. Read testimonials and talk to past clients if possible. When you visit a clinic, look at the certificates, diplomas and awards decorating the walls of the cosmetic surgeons working there to see if the paperwork supports their professional claims (and if they're real!)
